if you replace or add new modules, you have to do this in the device configuration. The firmware and the module type (article number) must match the real module. Then compile everything and download it to the CPU.

Or do you want to exchange the modules during operation? In this case, you should configure the modules that support hot swapping.

I think what you are asking about it runtime hardware configuration options, meaning optional hardware.  You can search these forums for references and this support site for example project showing how to do it.

S7-1500 Configurable hardware (there are better search terms, but this should get you there)
