S7-PLC and the IEC 61850

Moat Posts: 2 Rating: (0)	Hello, I have a project for a substation which requires a communication with the PDMSaccording tothe IEC 61850 standard, I have selected a S7-300 PLC with communication card using TCP/IP protocol ( I want to connect the measurement devices through this protocol to the PLC), the use of the PLC is to control the Automatic Transfer Switch andcommunicate with the PDMS. The problem is with the communication to the PDMS, I was wondering is there a recommended device to make the conversion between the TCP/IP protocol from my PLC to the IEC 61850 standard. One of my colleagues suggested using a gateway to do that, but I don’t know which device could do that, any suggestions? Regards: Moat

It is a PC-based solution with a software dedicated to substation and energy automation. It is certified by Kema and isa product from Energy Automation division from Siemens. In comparison to a driver in S7, you have the advantage of reading fault-records directly from protection devices, capacity to connected 150 devices in one system or upto 350 in distributed system (1 server and additional computers as interface processors) and up to 20.000 datapoints to be read from these devices. Depending on the hardware you are using, you simply import the ICD/SCD file into Sicam PAS and just choose which information you want from a table. If the number of equipments and data volumeis low, you can use a driver inside S7-300/400 or PCS7. For electrical system - IEC61850 is today mainly used for protection and control in electrical substation -events occurs in miliseconds. IEC61850 is not a polling protocol, butuses aserver-client scheme: Server (IED or protection device) sends data to client (ex.: Sicam PAS or automation system) via reports, when changes in information statusoccurs . If changes are fast, these reports tellsexactlyeach change with timestamps, so you never lose events even when several informations changes really fast, and by fast I mean 1 ms. Opposed to polling protocols, IEC61850 does not send all data all the time, but only detailed information on what changed. I thinkthis block for S7 is base on polling protocol (just like Profibus os Modbus): S7 reads data cyclically from equipments, and here problems occurs. If S7 reads data at one instant and 500ms after reads againg (polling cycle), everything that happened during thistime are lost!!! Andfor electrical system events occurs in some miliseconds. Normally the protection device is capable of registering these fast events properly, but if S7 cannot read it, it can be critical. Of course it all depends on what you want or need. Mike J
