Where to begin: size, power, speed, memory, backplane, communication connections, redundancy, price,...? too many variables . Both are modular PLCs, but the S7-300 is considered a mid-range unit, and the S7-400 is high-end: more powerful in all areas (although the most powerful S7-300s are quite nearthe performance levels ofthe lowest S7-400s). Both are programmed with Step 7, both have the same program structure, the same networks, the same available function modules. Only the S7-400 offer true hotbackup redundancy. So giving a simple answer will be difficult. JMJ Posts: 487 Rating: (45)	I could not find any document which states this, but from my experience communication speed of CP is much faster on a S7-400. In S7-300 the CPU to CP communication is much slower. This may be due to the backplane on S7-400 vs the connector on S7-300

JMJ Posts: 487 Rating: (45)	Another major difference in S7-400 is that it supports multi-computing. This is multiple (up to 4)processors in 1 PLC rack splitting the work load of the process. This is very useful in extreamly complicated and fast processes but not supported by S7-300. I think CiR is only supported by S7-400 too.
