Hello Experts of S7-1500,

Recently I heard  that as on date S71500 is a SIL3 rated PLC, and additionally it is one of the fastest PLC processer in the world. If you may kindly elaborate more about the features of S71500, and if it SIL3 rated? I understand High Availability version of S71500 CPU is not available until end of next year.

Me too.. I don't consider my self an expert in S7-1500

But I can tell you according to technical specifications that Fail Safe CPU released are now SIL3 certified.

So Redundancy or high availability has nothing to do with SIL3 rating? It can be SIL3 rated without being truly redundant?

1. Till now There is no redundancy in S7-1500 like in S7-400H
2. But there are Fail Safe modules released for S7-1500 and also there are Fail Safe modules released for ET200M / ET200S for instance.
3. These modules have certificates SIL3 and SIL3 can be achieved.
4. Redundant I/Os are not a must to achieve SIL3. It depends on follow the instructions and wiring schemes described in manuals. For instance: For DI-Fail Safe module, you have to wire only half of DI-signals and 2nd half should be bridged to the same sensors. It means that for DI-F24, Only 12 Signals can be wired to achieve SIL3. And if you wired 24 Signals even if redundant, It will not achieve SIL3.

SIL Ratings are more to do with Safe Operation of equipment rather than System availability.

SIL Ratings determine, to what extent can a process be expected to perform safely? And, in the event of a failure, to what extent can the process be expected to fail safely?

Redundancy is one of the ways of reducing the risk of failure but not the only method.

Just to add something, As I told to achieve SIL3 Redundancy in IOs is not a must.

See this manual and go to Each module and see the flow chart which will guide you to achieve the needed SIL level For ET200M Fail Safe Modules

For ET200 MP (for S7-1500) there is no one manual for all modules, you have to download manual for each module.

Foe example: For F-DI 16 Module:

I did not read this info but I have seen a video to compare the S7-300 & S7-1500 CPU performance.

The comparison was based on measuring the scan cycle time, seeing the diagnosics on the S7-1500 display, ..etc

Fore sure these are more features better in S7-1500 than those in S7-300

But also, desicion will still based on the application needs and price.
