Siemens 545-1104 w/ 505-CP5434 - profibus goes into CLEAR mode

ddeacon Posts: 2 Rating: (0)	I have several 545-1104 units with 505-CP5434 annex cards. The PLC rack and 4 servo drives are connected via Profibus and are all contained within the same control cabinet. The PLC and the 4 servo drives are the only items connected to the Profibus cable. When we install the machines, the Profibus connection works fine. During normal use, the PLC will loose communication with the drives. We replace the PLC and load the same software and it resumes working. When I do a complete clear of the PLC processor on the card that lost communication and reload program and configuration, the profibus will go to CLEAR mode and never go into OPERATE mode. I suspect that this is a hardward failure. What does the CLEAR mode mean (I cannot find this mode in any of the documentation)? What are the problems that could cause this failure? Should I have some type of surge protection or filter in between the drives and the PLC processor?

There is defintely a HW failure on the Profibus DP port of these CPU's and in the online status of the Profibus configurator it says that the Profibus network is in Clear mode. (i'm using the 505 Workshop Profibus configurator) iwas able to confirm this by running my testconfiguration on a third 555-1104 CPU where the Profibus communication was working fine.

I just fixed two of these with this problem. 545-1104 with CP5434-DP card 555-1104 with CP5434-DP card Both DP cards were transmitting but not receiving data back. With a single twisted pair (RS485) (Profibus) the reciever should always be able to see its own transmission out. (evidently not seeing it causes the failure). After changing the chips each CPU will now go into Operate mode via TI-SOFT. Just thought I would share, in case someone searches for this problem.. Duane

OldHandCTI Posts: 3 Rating: (0)	Most likely, he meant changing out the RS485 transceiver chips on the circuit board. But rather than take a chance on changing out parts, it's much easier to just get a new CPU from CTI. Then there is no question about the health of the Profibus system. They even have a trade-in offer where you can get credit for sending in your old Siemens / TI CPU.
