SITRANS F M MAG 5000 TOTALIZER 1 PROBLEM

Hello ,

We have problem in SITRANS F M MAG 5000 Flow meter in the totalizer .

It continuously counting even if there is no water in the pipe !?

What is the problem , before it was working very well , from 1 week this problem started.

I have often found changes in the process piping cause backflow, flow when previously there was no flow or stopped flow when the should be flow.  Just because if was one way last week, doesn't always mean it's the same way this week.

When troubleshooting a false flow indication, check the the troubleshooting section of the Mag 5000/6000 manual.  It shows that an electrode cable bad connection, missing connection or damage to the shielding of the electrode cable can cause false flow indication.

The meters so have an Empty Pipe detection feature, but it requires special shielded cable with individual conductor shielding to function properly.

You should check all the following:

1- Totalizer flow direction, It should be forward only.

2- Be sure of totalizer number and corresponding settings.

3- Low flow cut off, be sure of its value as it must be close enough to minimum flow reading of your MAG.

If your problem solved, Just let me know

If not, try to reset the Flow meter to factory defaults - It must work with no problems after resetting -

Typically, when no water in pipe you should get alarm on screen. Generally, when you kept empty pipe detection OFF, during this phase due to any unwanted interference can cause fluctuating flow rates. Fluctuations can be very small or very big. I've seen flow meter fluctuating between -1400m3/h to 500m3/h. Basically when empty pipe detection is OFF, you are allowing electrodes to read the wrong values. 

First remedy is to ON your Empty Pipe Detection feature. It worked on major cases on water distribution lines, when pipes drained due to shortage of water / some other issues.

Second remedy is to provide grounding ring. Possibly grounding electrode malfunctioned or covered with some oil/dirt inside the sensor.

You can also set the totalizer function to Net Flow Forward or Net Flow Backwards depending upon your application.
