Sitrans FM Magflo Mag5000 blind

Some stuff to know about Mag 5000's.

1.  The way you determine what features the Mag5000 has is to check the Siemens spec sheet (pgs 1-4 in this case) and read what the blind meter has.  Inspection might show that it has an optional digital comm module inside the case.

The blind unit is either 120/230Vac line powered or a different model, 24Vdc powered.   They all have 4-20mA.  They can have optional digital comm modules, HART, Profibus PAor DP, Modbus RTU, Foundation Fieldbus, DeviceNet

2. Never remove or install a Mag5000 onto its base/junction box when the junction box is powered.   Doing so is highly likely to damage the electronics beyond repair and then you have a brick.   That means finding the disconnect for each magmeter and hoping that the whole process doesn't get shut down when you need to remove or replace a Mag5000.

3.  The 4-20mA output comes from the factory turned off and must be turned on via the Mag5000, whether through the keypad or optional HART.   Presumably those that output 4-20mA are already configured for that, but it's the only field instrument I've ever run into that I had enable the primary output in order to get the signal.

4.  I'm terrible at remembering the navigation through various parameters, whether via keypad or HART.  I always have a copy of the navigation menu from the Mag 5000 manual

5.  Mag5000 assemblies should have a Sensor Prom installed in the junction box.  The settings are saved in the Sensor Prom.   So a Mag5000 with a display can be substituted for a blind Mag 5000 because the setting are in the sensor prom which remains in the junction box.  .

I just noticed that the menu navigation is in the Quick Start Guide, too.

The sensor prom mounts in the junction box and the Mag5000 plugs into its connector prongs when the Mag5000 is seated onto the junction box/connector card.  The sensor prom is not part of the Mag 5000 electonics.

6.  I have come across three failures associated with the connection board - the printed circuit board with the connectors that fastens to the junction box and that the Mag5000 plugs into.   The connection is a passive board - just printed circuit traces and connectors, no active components.  I have no clue how or why it would fail, but I've run into three bad ones.   The last time I ordered one, the part number was A5E02559816.   Worth having a spare in your tool box.

7.  Here's what Siemens tells you to do for Blind transmitters (page 41 pdf in the manual) [my edits in square brackets]:

6.1 MAG 5000/6000 Blind
Note: Does not have a display. All factory settings will be uploaded from the SENSORPROM® unit after power-up.
For sensor dependent factory settings, see Transmitter factory settings (Page 95).

Changing settings

If other settings are required, a standard transmitter with display and similar power supply can be used.

[ turn off the power ]

1. Unscrew and remove MAG 5000/6000 Blind.

2. Mount standard MAG 5000/6000 transmitter.  [power it back up.]

3. Change required settings via display and keypad.
All changed data will be stored in SENSORPROM® memory unit.

4. [turn off the power]  Remove standard transmitter and remount Blind transmitter.

5. Fasten screws holding transmitter.  [turn power back on]

New settings stored in SENSORPROM® memory unit will be uploaded in blind transmitter

8.  I can't really recall connecting to a Mag5000 via HART, either Siemens PDM software/HART modem, or a handhled like a Meriam 5150.  There really isn't a lot to configure on Mag
- engineering units (gallons/minute?)
- Qmax, what most people call the URV, what 20mA represents, the max flow at 20.0mA = 200 gpm
- enable the 4-20mA

According to the spec sheet the blind unit doesn't come with a factory HART option, but I can't imagine that the HART module won't fit and work, although I haven't done it myself.

HART might be able to provide the totalizer value, but everyone I know uses Modbus for that.

You might need to get a standard Mag5000 with a display to use as an access tool to work on these blind mags.

My approach would be to substitute a known good, working Mag5000 and see what it tells you about the operation of the flow tube.   Is the flow rate reasonable?   Are there any error codes displayed?

The people who buy blind Mag5000's remove the blind box and use a 'standard' Mag 5000 with its display and keypad to do configuration and then put the blind Mag5000 back on.

Magmeters are self-zeroing on conductive, steel pipe.  There is no offset adjustment in the configuration because pulsed DC technology magmeters generally do not drift from zero.

Given the self-zeroing functionality, it's fairly likely that a flow reading when "the valve is closed" means that the valve is leaking or not shut all the way.

Presumably anyone paying for bill for the installation of 42 flow meters collects data from them.  Whoever operates the control system should know how the signals from the magmeters get into the control system.  Probably 4-20mA.  But it could be a comm protocol requiring a comm module.

If the field wiring is home run wiring, every transmitter back to the controller, then it's 4-20mA.  I think all the comm protocols use daisy-chain bus wiring: device 1 to device 2 to device 3, etc.   Modbus RTU and Profibus DP definitely are daisy chained.

All the comm modules are optional modules.   There is one standard Mag5000 with a keypad/display AND with a HART module installed at the factory that has a separate model number.   If comm modules were installed after initial purchase, I doubt there's any markings to indicate the presence of a comm module.
