Step 7 v5.3 - v5.2

neilyboy Posts: 2 Rating: (0)	We have v5.3 pro. A customer of ours is running v5.2 pro. Will they be able to open our offline projects? Is there really that much difference between v5.2 and 5.3? Does anyone have any experience of trying this out? I don't fancy back-tracking to 5.2 and also don't fancy buying them 5.3 for nothing

The differences between STEP 7 V5.2 an V5.3 are explained here: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/21953134 or in the appending file. But there is no problem to open STEP 7 projects in V5.2, that were created with V5.3. You only have to take care, that all needed software packages (e.g. S7-SCL), that are used by the project, are installed (check in the SIMATIC Manager: project properties -> Required software packages), when you want to edit the project. If you have used new hardware, that is unknown to STEP 7 V5.2, you can manually update the hardware catalog for HW-Config (in HW-Config via: Options -> Install HW updates...). On another note, the same customer requires data transfer between controllers and i've obviously said Global Data Transferover MPI but he keeps going on about DP - DP communication. Do you know what he's on about? Or is he gettingconfused and actual means GD.

In this case one PLC is the DP master and the other is the DP slave. This is used to exchange low to average data volumes (up to approx. 200 bytes) very quickly. Have a look at this example: Direct Data Exchange between separate DP Systems via DP Communication

Some components are not available in STEP7 V5.2 (Professional), most of these components are Profinet-components. If you look in the catalogues you can see which STEP7 version you need for which device. Regards, kgw

Late Platinum Expert Joined: 1/7/2006 Last visit: 7/3/2023 Posts: 2705 Rating: (314)	Hi, With STEP7 V5.3 comes alsothe Profinet Components which are installed, so V5.2 wouldn't work with newer components. That is the most of all wenn a Version Update comes. [;)] Off Version V5.3 you can download HSP {Hardware Service Packs}, but there also when for example a new component in V5.4 (thats the one whats now up-to-date) thats not in V5.3 but needs V5.4 for the new things that are installed in V5.4 then you couldn't use the Hardware in the older Version. [:(] But upwards the Versions are always compatible, if the customer updates to V5.4 then they have no trouble with your software. The bset is to buy a SUS {Software Update Service} so that you get always the newest Version and the Service Packs for a price that is ok, when you have to search for some hours after trouble between the older and newer Versions then you have already consume the price for the SUS.... [:P]
