Updating TIA Portal V11 SP1 (solved)

Tried to update to 5 for Step 7 basic at this site: https://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/llisapi.dll?func=cslib.csinfo&lang=en&objid=58112582&caller=view But, the first .exe file wouldn't load.. it couldn't find the necessary folder for downloading the necessary files. This is a valid licensed V11 basic, with programs for the 1212C CPU .. The update instructions are not very clear .. any ideas what I'm missing .. other than purchasing V13 ? Thanks, Regards, Michael

Thanks, Regards, Michael Micheal, It would have been helpful if you said which hardware it is that you need to use. You might need to update the hardware catelog with un update. See [LINK] which links to [LINK]. Something you need to know about the files you saw in the link you provided.. You have to download ALL the files in a temporary directory. The EXE file is actually the first of an executable split archive. When you execute the EXE it will construct new files.. as if you received a ZIP file. Make sure you know where the "new" files are stored. The installation begins when you execute the unzipped install file. Having said all that.. if your PLC is of firmware 4.0, you will have a problem and will HAVE to go to TIA V13. There is however a very good chance that you have firmware V3 which TIA V11 can handle if you have made the hardware update. Does this help you? Greetings. w

I was under the impression that the file was already there ... presumabily because TIA V11 is already there. The new equipment is a Digital IO module SM 1223 (8DI/8DO) .. I need those 8 outputs as a byte, for that other issue you were helping me with.. the Command Table for a LinMot Linear Motor. Back to the updates .. When you say I need to download to a tempory directory, I assume that means I must create that directory. Siemens says: "To install the update, all 3 files must be downloaded to the same directory; now start SIMATIC_TIAP_V11_0_SP2_UPD5.exe." I have no idea how to do that .. I've never "started" a directory .. I need a one line tutorial on that one. Regards, Michael PS..Actually, your instructions are very clear, and much appreciated ... but, all it takes is one little piece of ignorance (mine) in that category of required knowledge, and the progress really slows down... sigh!

Lamboom Posts: 90 Rating: (0)	Windows XP... updated as far as possible. There are many levels of "using Windows" .. My level is sort of "Functional" .. but, I'm not a programmer .. I've studied C# and know how to get in trouble using that. Who woulda thought a simple update should require serious computer skills. Part of the problem... I use mostly Mac's ..But, I like PC's ... I've taken them all appart, put 'em back together.. Re-immaged them .. but.. I've never created a .exe file... sigh!

Have you downloaded the files yet? If not.. when you download the files from the internet, you have to tell Windows XP where to store it. You can already there specify where it should store the files. If you had Windows store it where-ever it wanted.. then it is a bit more problematic. Use the tools provided by Windows Explorer ( keyboard shortcut: [windows key] + e).The files you need is.. SIMATIC_TIAP_V11_0_SP2_UPD5.exe ( 1799 KB ) SIMATIC_TIAP_V11_0_SP2_UPD5.001 ( 665600 KB ) SIMATIC_TIAP_V11_0_SP2_UPD5.002 ( 665600 KB ) SIMATIC_TIAP_V11_0_SP2_UPD5.003 ( 26813 KB ) You can copy and paste these files to a directory or leave it where is is.. it does not really matter. If all x4 files are there, run the EXE. A message comes up asking where does files go to. Make sure you know where it goes. If the EXE is finsihed, go to the place the EXE said it will store its resulting files. Run the files there. w

You have better things to do than teach how to use Windows XP! .. This is a good chalenge .. to do these updates .. I expect I will get TIA V13 anyway .. it has good, new features, and a updated catalog (I hope :-) The only reason I went to the forum was because during the downloading, a window popped up saying it couldn't find that file.. And I was clueless that I had to create it ...

William_B Posts: 5225 Rating: (1198)	Hi. Careful.. personally I would not recommend to use TIA V13 on a Windows XP machine. TIA V11 is already a hungry resources monster.. but it is a baby when comparing to TIA V13! Do a search on the web on what is the minimum requirement for TIA V13. If you are a student.. work with what you have. TIA V11 is good enough for what you need. If you are employed.. you need to look at much more than TIA - go have a look what the minimum specification for TIA V13 is. I recommend Windows 7 Professional as operating system. Having a machine with Windows XP can be an advantage. So I would go new rather than upgrade the Windows XP machine. It is my time to waste here.. this is afterall voluntary. Having said that.. jumping into PLCs without basic computer / Windows skills is not recommended. You have to break the habit of making the PC a toy / entertainment centre. Start thinking of the PC as a tool in your toolbox. If you can not use a tool correctly, you will "hurt" yourself. This can be easily remedied.. if you wish to - speak to close friend. Good luck!! The XP was from eairlier days getting started with Siemens equipment.. I'm not a student. this effort is to support a long time project related to model ocean test engineering. Check out website: microoceans.com to see the application. I don't have much training in motion controll engineering .. just enough to assume "I can make this work" Regards, Michael

Create a folder on the desktop, transfer the 4 downloaded files from the downloads folder to that desktop file.. which I named "SIMATIC_TIAP_V11_0_SP2_UPD5" ...opened the folder and ran the .exe file. All functioned as expected; restarted, and the Upgrade 5 window launched, and was off and running.. one problem ... I didn't have V11 - "SP2" .. but, I did have it on a CD, so am now trying to upgrade to SP2 using the DVD ... I think it's working ... sigh! will then go back and run update 5 from that desktop folder. Ya know, if the basic procedure above is correct.. why couldn't Siemens just say to do it that way Thanks again... Regards, Michael
