Use Area Pointer with Symbolic access?

RasmusDK Posts: 17 Rating: (0)	Hello In TIA v13 - i was wondering how to use Are Pointers with symbolic addresses - like creating a struct in a DB and assign that to the Area Pointer - that's not possible? I can select absolute addressing in the area pointer, then type in my start address - but that seems a bit strange to me - that i need to do that?

What are you trying to achieve? Area pointers will always use absolute addressing (example: P#M2.0). Area pointers can point to inputs, outputs, bit memories, global data, instance data, temp local data,.. You want to point to a struct in a DB, so you should use a DBpointer (example: P#DB6.DBX8.0)or an ANY pointer (example: P#DB5.DBX2.0WORD 12). In your case you could apply your STRUCT to anANY parameter and let the program generate an ANY pointer to the data structure. This way you can use a symbolic address and let the program generate an ANY pointer to that address. Kind regards, Jens

Yes you should disable block access if you wish to use pointers, but the question is do you need to use pointers? Standard block access might be more flexible but optimized block access is much faster and safer. Please share with us what your program is meant to do. Maybe we can offer a solution that is more suitable. Kind regards, Jens

Yes - i would also like to use the optimized block access - but maybe that isn't possible because i'm planning to do some kind of multiplexing for the tags, depending on how i can access them. The only thing i need to read out with the area pointer - is to read out the actual screen number :)

Hi there. Which PLC do you intend using? Would the use of arrays be helpful for your application? Please consider structured (UDT) arrays. The index number can be a variable. Greetings. w

Greetings. w As William says, I would also look in that direction, note that indexed addressing is possible when using optimized block access. Addressing array components by index is a possibility.

Then my problem is solved... :) Yes it can, you can create an array of a UDT and access your array components with an index. Example: -Create your UDT (example named "UDT_Data") -Create an array of UDT (array[0..10] of "UDT_Data") -Create an integer that hold your index number (example #Index) -Access your array components by using UDT_Data."componentname"[#Index]
