VMWare Performance

Dear All

I recently upgraded my laptop, but the problem is that the performance of virtual windows is degraded instead of being upgraded.

I created a virtual machine for step7 with windows 7. But the performance of Virtual windows on my old laptop is better, i.e., when I open a block, on my old laptop it instantly opens but on the new one it may take around 2-4 seconds to open up.

All settings on both machines are the same (I copied the VM to the new laptop).

New laptop spec: Core-i7 12700H, RAM: 32GB, SSD 2TB

Old Laptop spec: Core-i7 8550U, RAM: 16GB, SSD 1TB

Any idea what might be the problem?

check which processor core is used for the vmware.

it should alway a performance core and not a efficient core be used.

Agreed in principle, but the problem is that VMware doesn't really cater for this and has still NOT addressed the issue of performance and efficiency cores that newer CPU now have.

While there's various workaround available, fundamentally this is still a VMWare flaw, but VMWare either doesn't listen or doesn't care or can't find a way to fix it.

Anyhow, suggest you google "VMWare performance and efficiency cores" or similar terms and see if any of the available advice out there helps you.

i have the same problem with a new computer i7-11850H.

When I click to open the blocks under step7, it takes 6-7 seconds. Before it was instantaneous.

The Vmware image (W7) is the same and the Vmware Workstation version (V17.0) is the same as well.

I Test with Vmware workstation V16 and V17.1, same issue.

Really strange.

OK, i am assuming you are running VMWare Workstation here?

Intel 12th Gen Alder Lake chips like the I7 12700H in my XPS 15 can cause a problem this Workstation as it cannot tell the difference between Power Cores and Efficiency Cores.

In my case the CPU has 6 Power Cores and 8 Efficiency Cores and VMWare does not know the difference and binds to any of them resulting in a performance hit.

This only occurs with Windows 11 and is not an issue in Win 10. Try to solve it by run the following in an elevated CMD prompt -

powercfg /powerthrottling disable /path "C:Program Files (x86)VMwareVMware Workstationx64vmware-vmx.exe

In my case command is: powercfg /powerthrottling disable /path "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\x64\vmware-vmx.exe"

VMWare Workstation Pro 17.5.2, 1 processor with 4 cores, 16 GB RAM. Tremendous change in TIA V17 speed.
