Leonardo, the Siemens LOGO is not suited to drive a stepper motor with a PTO (pulse train output). Other manufacturers with almost the same footprint sized PLC does give this ability. To drive a stepper motor, you need an amplifier (power portion) and an indexer (provide pulse reference). An indexer can be a PLC / microcontroller (PIC; Arduino; ++) / PC (parrallel port). I sometimes even use a stepper driver that is a all in one (indexer+amplifier+motion controller). It all depends if you need it for studies / hobby / industrial application. For Siemens PLC range you can try S7-200 (discontinued in non-Chinese countries). Better yet you can get your hand on an S7-1200. The S7-1200 has advanced motion control capabilities. I have used both of these PLCs for industrial applications (stepper / servo / VSD). The LOGO can be used if you have a self contained indexer-amplifier device for your stepper motor. The LOGO is able to read sensor pulses at 5kHz to make positioning possible. I have used a LOGO for VSD driven positioning before. There are many options. William_B Posts: 5225 Rating: (1204)	Hi, I gave this issue a bit more thought.. wondering if there is not a way to get the LOGO to drive a stepper - even if it is not suited well. For it to work it must be the transistor output kind.. not relay. Theoretically you will have to look into 2 possibilities.. But first some background: The indexers I have worked with needs a frequency pulse. The frequency is varied to achieve ramp up, running and ramp down. Ramp up has the frequency adjusted dinamically from a low frequency to high frequency. Ramp down varies from high to low frequency. 1. The LOGO has a PWM instruction. This function is there to modify the ON time vs OFF time of a pulse according to an analog value (internal calculation or external input). The "periodic time" needs to be varied dinamically. A link can be established to an Analog Ramp function, for example. 2. The Asynchronous pulse generatorfunction is an alternative. Again the pulse rate will need to be varied dinamically using the Analog ramp function. ..so maybe the LOGO can drive a stepper motor's amplier. I have not thought through all the detail - maybe someone else will be willing to fill in the blanks. I would still suggest the use of the S7-1200 instead. Helpful? w

NOTES: * The provided program executes ramp up / run / ramp down * An up/down counter can be use instead of the Analog Ramp.. this should give a smoother action. * Note that frequency change linear not pulse period. Alternatives are welcomed. w

Wow.. you don't ask for much do you? Seriously though.. "Leonardo Frontarolli" did not ask for positioning. As I said before, the LOGO is not suited for such control. Crude positioning is possible. Doing accurate position control will be more difficult. The difficulty lies in it that you need to know how many pulses are generated to ramp up and ramp down the motion at a set speed. If the speed is fixed and tuning can be done, then it is possible. If it is calculations on-the-fly.. no sorrry. What I will tell you is that I have done VSD positioning with a LOGO. A pulsing signal from the LOGO gave the VSD a speed reference. (VSD did own ramping, LOGO did not control ramping.. much easier than stepper) An low rate single pulse encoder and home stop sensor gave feedback. Positioning was done using a rule based logic. Accuracy was measure in [mm] and not [um], but it was good enough. If you are serious about wanting to know more.. (there is a catch or two) I suggest you start a new thread and ask the question.
