Measure Flow with Sitrans probe LU

danw Gold Expert Joined: 3/28/2010 Last visit: 11/16/2024 Posts: 1074 Rating: (214)	The term "open channel flow' relates to the techniquie of getting a flow rate measurement by physically measuring the liquid level behind a restriction with an opening through which the water flows. The restriction is typically a weir with a cutout of known dimensions. Very small level changes can represent very large flow rate changes. Siemens' OCM ultrasonic flow meter is designed and intended for Open Channel Measurement, and includes calculations for flow rate. If you use a Probe LU you will not have the resolution or accuracy of the OCM and you'll have to roll your own calculations.

You are going to engineer a flow project with a weir, an open channel flow calculation, and a Probe LU, each of which has its own potential uncertainty error, which we all call 'accuracy'. You can look up the accuracy spec of a Probe LU on its spec sheet, and then RMS (root mean square) all the combined errors to see what the system flow rate error is. Or you can take a short cut and calculate flow rate at one level using your open channel flow calc, then subtract or add the accuracy spec value for Probe LU and recalculate flow rate at the new level and compare the flow rates.

blowouter Posts: 32 Rating: (2)	thanks for replay but i am still astudent i change the problem to measure volume of liquid instead of flow and i found that probe can measure volume using p050 to p055 parameters my tank has non uniform shape so i try to make required configuration best reagrds

Toppie Posts: 74 Rating: (3)	Hello blowouter The ProbeLU will convert a level to a flow but must be used with a primary element such as a flume or a weir. A simple paper on this is here http://cursos.puc.cl/unimit_agl_014-1/almacen/1219763720_lgurovic_sec4_pos0.pdf You cannot directly determine flowrate using rate of fill or discharge using the ProbeLU. It does not have these algorithms installed. The MultiRanger200 or HydroRanger200 does. Cheers Toppie[ \|:)

blowouter Posts: 32 Rating: (2)	thanks all for replies i have programmed it to measure volume of the tank and the sensor is located above the tank the steps of configuration i do to measure volume is Steps of programming SITRANS Probe LU to measure volume: 1. select language p010=0 numeric 2. measurement mode p001=1 level and volume 3. response time p003=3 10m/minute fast 4. units of measurement p005=2 (centimeters) 5. process empty level p006=63 cm distance between sensor face and zero level of liquid 6. set range to be measured p007=30 cm distance between zero level and full 7. tank p050=2 tank is cone shape p052=A=15 cm p051=maximum volume exist within p007 level p051=7605.7 cm³ (ml) and the manual of it is very good and contain large amount of information
