There are more than one way to integrate a WinCC flexible project with STEP 7 Project. As you told after adding the device .... and after you added HMI device, What if your Device is a PC? What will be the next step? You should click on the device and open "HW config" and you will found that the device is still not connected to your PLC. You need to configure the connection method. Which CP you will use for instance. Without this step, you won't be able to establish a communication between your HMI (PC) and PLC. Another way is to work in WinCC flexible side as descriped in this FAQ: How do you integrate a WinCC flexible project in STEP 7? Hope this helps.

GSD files are necessary to be used with old systems (S5) or when you need to read a key directly for the PLC field bus (i.e. when the reaction time of the "normal" communication PLC - CPU is not fast enougth).
