The new SIMATIC S7-1200 programmable controller family is herewith released for delivery. It is published on 06/10/2009 so there wouldn't be so much users which had the possibility to test it allready. Didn't you think so too? But may be others with practical experiences could tell us more Sabine

bakerjw Posts: 126 Rating: (18)	Although no product is ever released 100% bug free I would not hesitate to use an S7-1200 PLC in a project. Sure there are some shortcomings and bugs or undocumented features will be found but the testing of what is in the product at release was very thorough. Unfortunately testers cannot duplicate every possible scenario that may be tried by the end users. Be assured that testing continues whenever any issue is reported or noted. From working with S7-200s, 300s, and 1200s I can say that I prefer the 1200 hands down. And it will only get better. Just my take

However, playing around with the S7-1200 is ok, but I won't use for the next two years or until Siemens is able to released a proper documentation. ==> The current system manual with its correction manual doesn't give me any confidence, sorry. Just my take.

Happily, most products have a forum like this one in which information can be exchanged and solutions found. ==EDIT== To answer the original question that posed in this thread, I feel good about the S7-1200. It's a pretty cool system andit will continue to expand and improve. The features and functionality you get for your money are very good.

My advise to you is if you want to work with STEP7 Basic for your own sake take a Software Upgrade Service contract for at least 2 or 3 years. Many updates/upgrades to come in the next couple of years. About programming: When working with STEP7 Basic the concept of combining PLC and HMI editor makes a point. Especialy for programming the smaller PLC's (nice AB term). You just need one piece of software to program it all. Of course there are some missing functions like cut and paste in more then one editor/header/watch table/etc. but that sort of things can happen in a version 1.0.5, uhh 10.5. If you work with STEP7 Basicmost things go natural (intuitive) and sometimes you need help (I prefer the book, but also the online help is rather complete). Programmining is easy to do, even I can do it. And as some people already said it is like programming a S7-300/400, but alsoa bit of S7-200 programming and a bit of RSLogix (AB). I like working with the software. My chief not, because I asked already for a new second computer with lots of graphic potentials and an enormous monitor. Working with the WinCC V10.5 is quiet easy to do, it differs a bit from WinCC flexible, but it "feels" good. I hope Siemens releases a Service Pack very soon because of the sake for comfotable programming and of course the need of firmware updates when new modules are released. Try it!

I have first version of tia portal .. dont have service pack 1 or 2 .. its possible that bug that bothers me is already corrected .. I recomend to buy update service for a year if buying tia portal, service packs are coming fast .. Once the program is loaded corectlly into PLC, it will act perfectly - there are no bugsat S7 1200 PLC as far as i saw .. I've used ethernet send and receive block .. temperature pid .. and motion control axes.
